Birth. Postpartum. Placenta. Lactation.
Whether it takes place at the hospital or at home, each birth is beautiful and deserving of celebration.
No matter how you birth your baby, everyone can benefit from having a doula.
Emylie Ellis, MSW, ACSW, MPH
Thank you for visiting my site! I am a birth + postpartum doula, placenta encapsulator, and lactation education specialist serving Los Angeles and surrounding areas since 2014. I respect both medical and alternative therapies. No matter where you fall on the crunchy to mainstream spectrum, I will provide you with nonjudgmental support. I recognize birth as a rite of passage and believe there is no single way to give birth. I work with my clients to connect physically, mentally, and emotionally with their labor and navigate their transition to parenthood.
Throughout the week, I work with school-age children as a psychiatric social worker (therapist) for a community health center in South LA. I received my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Social Work and my Master's in Public Health in Maternal & Child Health Policy and Leadership. Prior to my career in birthwork, I worked with the elderly for seven years providing care and overseeing supportive services.
Experienced with unmedicated birth, medicated birth, induction, cesarean birth, VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean), home birth, teen moms, high risk pregnancies, multiples, surrogacy, single parents, history of trauma, LGBTQ families, Hypnobabies, Hypnobirthing, and perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
A doula is a valuable addition to your birth team. Doctors, nurses, midwives - even family members - may be focused on other things, but a doula has one obligation and that's you. Numerous studies have shown that having continuous support from a doula results in shorter labors with fewer complications, a decrease in the use of medical interventions, and positive feelings about one's birth experience. Parents feel more secure, have greater success with breastfeeding, and there are fewer occurrences of postpartum depression. As a full-spectrum doula, services are provided towards women and families in any stage of the reproductive process. Wombmate provides a doula model-of-care across the full spectrum of pregnancy experiences, including live birth, adoption, and surrogacy. Please contact me to discuss doula services for abortion, termination for fetal anomalies, and stillbirth.
Women feel they have a lot to live up to in today's world. Society says you should be sleep deprived, be available all of the time, and be madly in love with your baby. One of the leading risk factors for postpartum depression is the discrepancy between what women are told versus how it really is. Postpartum doulas are there to help you and your partner build confidence in your new roles. Most education is centered on baby and not mama's recovery. Let us mother you! Research has shown that women and families who hire postpartum doula support have greater success breastfeeding, increased bonding with infants, less incidence of abuse, decreased risk of postpartum depression and anxiety, and greater overall confidence in parenting!
The same sperm and egg cells that form your baby, form the placenta. No placenta is alike! Take the time to admire your baby's wombmate, regardless of your choice to discard or use the placenta. Many women choose to encapsulate their placenta to reduce the risk of baby blues and/or postpartum depression. Throughout pregnancy, the placenta takes over the production of stress-fighting hormones. Once the placenta has been delivered, it may take a couple months before the mother's body begins producing again. By ingesting your placenta, you can maintain the level of hormones during the interim. Placenta has also been used to control heavy bleeding and postpartum hemorrhage.
